Hair Curiosities: Beauty Technical Consultant Gennaro Preite answers your questions about shampoos

1. Does anti hair loss shampoo work?
Yes, when the hair loss is due to the scalp being full of grease, clogging the bulb, preventing the hair from receiving oxygen and other necessary items, causing its loss. The anti hair loss shampoo is recommended because it's going to remove all the impurities from the hair pores.
In general, this kind of shampoo is composed by refreshing elements such as bamboo sprout, mint, and others, which provide an extreme cleanliness and refreshingness sensation.

2. What is the shampoo's pH?
It means the hydrogen factor which regulates the acidity and alkalinity of any nature's substance. Talking about hair, this table has an index from 0 to 12, and the balance factor of healthy hair must be between 5,5 and 6,5. The same works for shampoos.

3. What does salt-free shampoo mean?
Salt, in shampoos, is represented by sodium and it has a thickening function. It means that the most thick a shampoo is, the most salt it contains. What happens is that in some cases, the sodium dehydrates the hair too much, causing loss of the natural shine, making them fragile and lifeless. In general, sodium-free shampoos are glossy and thin, and they are recommended for hair that has been through some kind of straightening (brazilian hair straightening, japanese straightening or relaxers).

4. Does shampoo moisturize hair?
No. Shampoo's function is hygiene, cleaning. It's a sort of soap that eliminates the excessive grease from the scalp and hair.
Commonly, some substances that eliminate dehydration, such as cocamides, extracted from coconut, and parabens, sylicone's derivate, are added to the shampoos' formula. Some sorts of shampoos contain conditioners in their formula, which provides smoothness to the locks, but its main function is, for whatever kind of shampoo, TO CLEAN.

5. Is adding homemade recipes to the shampoo good for the hair?
It won't do any bad, but what may happen is that the original product's formula will lose its identity and effect, because some substances react randomly with others, in other words, without control, and it might cause irritation to the scalp, allergy, urticaria, besides losing its cleaning effect.

6. What are the differences between shampoos for normal, oily and dry hair?
The main difference between the three kinds is their detergency intensity, in other words, how much is the shampoo's astringency power.
The normal hair shampoo has medium level detergents, intended to provide a soft cleaning.
The dry hair shampoo contains elements that avoid removing the hair fiber - loss - during the wash, since the foaming ingredients in this shampoo are weaker.
In oily hair shampoos, the opposite happens: this products have a huge detergency power, high adherence to the hair fiber and produce plenty of foam, removing all the impurities of the hair and scalp. From this product, the industry has created the deep cleaning shampoo.

7. Is it true that the hair gets used to the shampoo?
No. What happens is that the shampoo achieves a regular cleaning effect at each wash, so that the person gets used to it.

8. Shampoo for children should be used up to which age?
Up to the age when it still has effect, for some children it takes longer. For others, the ripening is faster, requiring the use of shampoo for adults.

9. Does adding contraceptive to the shampoo work?
No, this is just a myth.

10. Does 2 in 1 shampoo work?
In some cases yes, on less oily or damaged hair.

11. While washing hair, how many times is it needed to apply the shampoo?
Twice per wash, average.
